The first
ever national cycling race organized by the South West regional League of the
Cameroon cycling Federation has been announced for December 27, 15. Barrister
John Kameni, SW league president who announced the event at a press briefing
Monday December 7 in Buea was categorical that at the moment, all is almost set
for the kick- off of the 130km race. The race that has been code named “cycling
in solidarity with the Cameroon arm forces in the fight against Boko Haram”
officials say will see the participation of some 48 athletes drawn from across
the country. “it will actually be the first time in 20years that a race
bringing together cyclists from across the country is taking place” the
Barrister –at –law cum SW league president told reporters at Monday’s briefing
at the Buea parliamentarian Flat Hotel.
As for the
itinerary of the 130km, Barrister John Kameni who is also councilor at the CPDM
-run Buea council guided that “the race will kick off from Kumba and Muyuka
through Muea, Mile 17-Buea, Mutengene,Limbe taking a ride towards SONARA and
then back to the town of Limbe itself passing through the SDO’s office, new
town and back to Buea through the same itinerary”
Elaborating
on the focus of the race dubbed cycling in solidarity with Cameroon arm forces
in the fight against Boko Harm; the league president expounded “the sacrifice
of our military at the warfront up North is worthwhile. We think that sports is
a unifying factor and cycling is part of it. That is why we intend to use this
race to show our support to the military who are making a lot of sacrifices to
prevent the attacks by the Islamic terror group, Boko Haram. In fact, they are
winning the war already, and we must show our support”
Meantime, unofficial
figures have that close to 50 cyclists are expected to take part in the race.
They include three from Adamawa region,same for the North and Far North. four
from the North West, twenty from the Centre, eight from the Littoral and seven
from the host region.
