Movement was
interrupted monday for a greater part of the day along the Yaounde-Douala
highway following the collapse of a culvert around the locality of Ebombe
situated some 25km from Edea in the Sanaga maritime division.
The unfortunate
incident which comes close to a year after the collapse of the bridge on the
Manyai River, along the same highway, left hundreds of passengers stranded as
circulation was paralysed.

Following yesterday’s
bridge collapse, passengers could be seen traversing the bridge on foot through
emergency pathways, while buses on their part crossed on the damaged bridge
without passengers.
Lorries and
other heavy duty vehicles plying the road, sources at the side of the incident
told The Cameroon Watch, were strictly forbidden from circulating.
“Anybody who
intends to undertake a journey on the Douala –Yaoundé highway, please postpone
it. The principal road between Edea and Pouma is partially disconnected” a
message which made the rounds on social media Monday read in part.
Following
the incident, public works minister, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, and Littoral
governor, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Dibua, accompanied by other government
officials, arrived at the site of the incident Monday afternoon for an
on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
By the time of writing this report, the government of Cameroon was yet to
make public any official statement on the bridge rupture that has slowed down
movement on the Douala-Yaounde axis, the busiest highway in the country.
Meanwhile,
it should be said this is the third time in less than a year that the road
linking Cameroon’s two largest cities (Yaounde and Douala) has collapsed.
It should
be recalled that On October 21, 2016, the bridge on the Manyai river situated some 68 km from Yaounde, also collapsed
following heavy rains on the night of October 20/21 2016.
The collapse of the bridge just like that of
yesterday also brought traffic along the
Douala-Yaounde highway to a complete halt.
Hundreds of
heavy-duty vehicles, inter-urban transport buses and personal cars were
stranded due to the incident.
